1. Arrive to the stores early

Lines at the stores usually start forming as early as 3 PM Thanksgiving Day. If you are after the limited quantity items, you need to be in this line. Some stores hand out vouchers an hour before the doors open. If you don’t get that voucher, you probably won’t get the merchandise.

2. Park close to an exit

Find a parking spot at a local store that is not open for Black Friday. This way, you won’t be stuck in the big rush of people coming in and out of the main store.

3. Dress warm and comfortable. This is not a fashion show.

The people in line don’t care what you look like. Ladies, leave the heels at home. Guys, don’t fix your hair, your going to be wearing a hat anyway. Even if by some miracle, it’s 50-60 degrees outside, it gets really cold when you’re in line for 8, 10, or even 12 hours. A thick coat, thermal underwear, and a nice pair of gloves will help keep you warm. Two layers of socks and comfortable tennis shoes are a must.

4. Divide and Conquer

What better way to plan your attack than at Thanksgiving dinner? Spread out the ads between family and friends, decide who is going to what store and make a list of what everyone wants. Each person buys everyone’s items and then you all meet up afterwards.

5. Shop Online

Many of the sale items will be available at the same Black Friday price online Thanksgiving Day. Purchase as many items as you can online through www.bfgear.com, and get the remainder Friday morning.

6. Make a “Dry Run” the night before Thanksgiving

About an hour before the store closes on Wednesday, go to the store and spot where everything is that you want to buy. Some stores, especially Best Buy, set up a checkout maze consisting of 4 foot high DVD players, TV’s, and other miscellaneous merchandise. One wrong turn could easily cost you an extra 45 minutes in the checkout line.

7. Leave the kids at home

Unless you’ve taught your kids to get the deal no matter what (which is probably bad parenting anyway), leave the kids with a babysitter or family member. There are a lot of people at the stores that will be more willing to trample your child than help them off the ground. Standing in line for 10 hours is not fun for an adult, what do you think it’s like for a child?

8. Protect your money

Although big sales attract loads of shoppers, they also attract loads of thieves. Ladies, leave your purse at home. Bring your ID, credit cards and/or cash and keep it close to you. Guys, with 2-3 layers of clothing, it’s harder to feel a thief lift your wallet while you’re not paying attention. Keep your wallet in your front pocket.

9. Make friends with others standing in line

Having a good conversation with someone standing in line can pass the time fairly quickly. Not to mention, if you have to run to the bathroom because you just drank an entire pot of coffee. Your newfound friend will probably be willing to hold your place in line, especially if you’re willing to return the favor.

10. DON’T bring alcohol to a shopping frenzy

Sure, adding a little something extra to your coffee may seem like a good idea, but there are police officers standing at every corner. They walk up and down the line to see what people are doing. They won’t have any problem hauling your butt off to jail because you decided to handle line jumpers your own way.

If fighting the crowds is not your style, you can always buy many of the items on your wish list online. Many shoppers don’t realize that beginning Thanksgiving Day around midnight, retail stores automatically adjust the prices to reflect Fridays’ sale. Simply purchase what is available online, and then decide if you want to pick them up later in the day, or pay a little extra to have it delivered to your front door.

Steep holiday discounts and bargain hunting boosted Black Friday sales, but a dour economic outlook leaves analysts skeptical that Americans will be able to sustain their buying frenzy for the duration of the holiday season.

Spending over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend rose 7.2% from a year ago to about $41 billion, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF). However, a shorter holiday shopping season and frugal shoppers could soon drive retail sales back down to their pre-holiday lows.

“Pent-up demand on electronics and clothing, plus unparalleled bargains on this season’s hottest items helped drive shopping all weekend,” said NRF President and CEO Tracy Mullin. “Holiday sales are not expected to continue at this brisk pace, but it is encouraging that Americans seem excited to go shopping again.”

The NRF continues to forecast a mild 2.2% jump in holiday sales, the smallest gain in six years

Several details in the NRF report underscored the group’s apprehension. For instance, more than half of the 110 million holiday shoppers that braved the elements this weekend went to discount retailers like Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT). Shoppers also took advantage of so-called “door buster” sales that offered products at extraordinary discounts to early morning customers.

More than 23% of the 73.6 million shoppers that hit stores Friday were in the door by 5 a.m. More than half, 57.6%, were at stores by 9 a.m.

Early-bird specials may have provided a nice boost to Black Friday sales, but offering goods at such cheap prices could backfire by marginalizing profits.

“You’re looking at discounts of 50% to 70% off,” Matthew Katz, managing director in the retail practice of advisory and restructuring firm Alix Partners, told the New York Times. “You have to sell two to three times as much to break even.”

Retailers cannot continue to offer shoppers such steep discounts, and consequently, will find it difficult to keep their attention. That is especially true this year, as thrifty consumers have taken a more targeted approach – swooping into stores for the things they want and retreating without taking the time to browse for additional items.

“Shoppers definitely have a mission this year,” Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst for NPD Group, told CNN. “They are serious about finding the best deals. They are very budget conscious, they’ve done their research and then they’ll go home.”

Also, this year’s holiday shopping season is five days shorter than last year. Consumers have just 27 days to shop this year, as opposed to 32 in 2007.

Analysts will get another glance into the psyche of the American consumer tomorrow (Tuesday) as sales data emerges for “Cyber Monday,” the unofficial kickoff of the online holiday shopping season.

Initial results showed a 2% increase in online sales over Thanksgiving and Black Friday, and the NRF said it expects another 84.6 million people to take their bargain hunting online Monday. According to a Nielsen Online survey, 36% of consumers will spend half of their shopping budgets on the Web, up from 32% last year.

Internet vendors are prepared for the online rush by offering discounts of their own, as well as free shipping, to potential customers.

The NRF’s eHoliday Survey showed that nearly 84% of online retailers will offer a special promotion on Cyber Monday, up from 72% last year. Nearly 39% of online retailers plan to offer specific deals, while 33% will offer e-mail campaigns and 25% one-day sales. About 23% will offer free shipping on all purchases.

“Online retailers have been planning their Cyber Monday promotions for months and are eagerly waiting to debut these deals to shoppers,” said Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org, an online division of NRF. “As shoppers focus on price this holiday season, online retailers will be extremely competitive to offer the very best deals. Americans who are looking to put a dent in their holiday shopping will be able to find thousands of bargains on Cyber Monday.”

Of course that’s not to say it will be any easier for online outlets to draw a crowd. Consumers may be planning to spend a greater portion of their budgets online, but overall those budgets have shrunk

For the first 23 days of November, holiday online spending reached $8.2 billion, a 4% decline compared to the corresponding days last year, when online sales hit $8.5 billion, according to online marketing research firm, comScore.

“There was an optimism going into the holiday season that online would weather the storm a little bit better,” Jessica Ried, associate director of research for Resource Interactive, an online-marketing consultancy told TIME magazine. “But this year in November we’ve seen the first online sales decrease ever.”

“I don’t know that this is the only prediction to go by,” Ried added, “but a dire prediction from an organization as big as comScore does give retailers pause.”

We are the most compassionate country on the face of this planet. There are those who would think that a bold statement; however, when you consider worldwide contributions in the form of relief efforts and international aid, obviously there is not a more giving country anywhere on Earth. With that said, we also own the distinction of being the most materialistic society on the globe.

It seems that we are also incapable of learning from the mistakes of past behaviors because we see this lunacy every holiday season. A Walmart employee in New York was crushed to death early Friday morning when crazed shoppers were so eager to get inside the store that they ripped the doors off the hinges, stampeding the employee and other employees coming to his aid, in the process.

In a separate incident at a Toys-R-Us in Southern California, two men shot each other to death after the women they were accompanied by began to fight near the checkout lanes. According to Toys-R-Us officials, as well as the Associated Press, the incident in Southern California was not related to Black Friday, but the tragic result of a personal dispute between the parties involved. This is pure conjecture on my part, but I have to wonder if that dispute originated over a particular toy. Stranger things have happened.

Apparently, we have become so de-sensitized to violence and equally indifferent to human behavior that the underlying issues have largely been ignored. On the surface, these were two unrelated and completely unnecessary human tragedies. While the deaths of these three individuals are disturbing enough, there are some profoundly disturbing issues at the root of both incidents.

In published reports that I have seen involving the Walmart incident, it was reported that when the store announced that it was closed as a result of the employee’s death, the reaction of some shoppers in the store was stunning. Some customers angrily proclaimed “I’ve been in line since yesterday,” and continued their search for holiday bargains, seemingly undeterred by the senseless tragedy that many of them had a hand in.

Have we lost our collective minds? Who in hell carries a gun into a Toys-R-Us? Obviously, some folks do; and now, two men (presumably with families) are dead. Christmas is less than a month away and there are three more families that will spend theirs grieving instead of celebrating as the result of a mindless act of violence and a bizarre accident.

 Walmart may not be found liable in this instance; although, there were certainly some measures that could have been taken prior to opening the store. Some sort of crowd assessment could have been helpful in avoiding this horrible tragedy.

From a legal standpoint (I’m not an attorney), I’m not sure if Walmart is liable or not. They run a very aggressive marketing campaign prior to Black Friday, as do many other major retailers, in anticipation of the busiest shopping day of the year. It is incredibly unfortunate that they underestimated shopper turnout.

There is still the issue of humans behaving badly. Have we become so animalistic in our material pursuits that human life is of no consequence?

If that’s the case, we are in serious trouble people.

 I’ve been hearing a lot about Black Friday and Cyber Monday. What is it? Is this something that affects eBay?

I’ve been thinking about selling items on eBay again.  I really don’t have anything here in the house to sell. It’s only a week until Thanksgiving, is there any way I can get some stuff to sell before the Christmas rush? Do you have any suggestions on where I could buy things to sell?

Black Friday is the kick off to the big Christmas shopping season. Black Friday falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving.  The term “Cyber Monday”, refers to the Monday right after Thanksgiving. Cyber Monday is supposed to symbolizes a busy day for online retailers. The idea behind it is that buyers would go back to work on Monday after the Black Friday weekend, making purchases online that they were not able to make in stores. Cyber Monday first came to life in 2005; many people think Cyber Monday is a fake day, invented by internet retailers.  

Traditionally, this time of year has always been good for me on eBay.  With the economy down, it might not be as good as it has been.  I go out every Black Friday to purchase Christmas presents for my family.  I’ve also been known to pick up stuff to sell on eBay when I go out early the day after Thanksgiving.  If you think you’d like to acquire some stock that way, you can always check out what toys retailers think will be hot this year hotchristmastoys.org and compare it to the Black Friday retailer sales circular; blackfriday.info.

You can also acquire stock to sell by going to thrift stores, vintage shops and antique stores.  I have a friend that purchases a good portion of her stock from the Dollar Store.  I believe she shops first; making a note of the items she thinks could sell well, then goes home and looks to see what the completed listings are ending for.   There are also liquidators or wholesalers.

I think the week after Thanksgiving has always been a good week for me on eBay.   I wish you lots of luck finding your inventory and Happy Thanksgiving.

 I’ve been buying on eBay for six years.  I have 2489 buying feedback.  Normally I ask my seller to send my items out via USPS parcel post, that way I can save money on shipping.  Lately I’ve had quite a few sellers give me a hard time about doing this.  Do you have any idea why?  My latest seller absolutely refused to use parcel post shipping.  What is the problem?

 I think the sellers are concerned you will be unhappy with the rate and speed of parcel post shipping.  Since eBay has instituted the Detailed Seller Ratings, a buyer can express their feelings like never before! I believe the sellers feel you could ding their DSR stars, or give them a negative or neutral for slow shipping. 

 Some sellers use only priority mail because they receive boxes free and it is so easy and quick to use. It could cost your seller more time and money to ship it parcel post.  Depending upon what you are buying, your seller may have to purchase a plain box or packaging, clear tape and labels.

 I know I would be afraid you would be unhappy with the time it takes to send an item via parcel post.  I have had buyers ask for parcel post and I upgrade them to Priority because of this. I think to alleviate a seller’s fears, I would let them know upfront that you realize it will take 5-10 days for your item to arrive, and you will not grade them on the post office’s shipping time.

Next you need to do a little research to find out what Black Friday deals are out there for you to take advantage of.  Make a list of the ones that you are most interested in. Now see if any of those stores are also companies that your credit card company is offering a special savings with. This way you can double or triple up on rewards when it’s time to buy.

Start Shopping

One thing you need to remember when it comes to Black Friday sales is that they start at the crack of early. Generally they begin at 12:01 A.M. on Friday morning, so you need to stay up late (or get up real early) to make sure you can get in on the online deals before they are sold out.

Cyber Monday

Just in case you don’t get all the shopping you had hoped to done on Black Friday, there is also Cyber Monday shopping. The Monday after Black Friday has become the biggest day for Internet sales of the year and many companies will be offering special sales this day as well.

How early you should get up and line up at the stores depends on what you are looking to buy that day. Most stores have “early bird” specials that you have to get there early if you are going to get that price. But if the items you are shopping for aren’t part of that sale, then there is no point in losing sleep. It certainly won’t help you fight the crowd – hundreds of people line up outside of stores on Black Friday before they even open their doors. One thing to think about is though, is that some stores have limited quantities of certain items, so if you are looking for something that is in high demand, you might want to get there early to ensure they won’t be sold out before you get there.

If you want to find the lowest prices on Black Friday, then it is best if you do some comparison shopping beforehand. You can do this by using the ads. I usually sit on my living room floor with all of the ads laid out before me and I circle the items that are on my list. Then I compare prices for each store to figure out where the best deal is. Be sure to read the small print so that you know the quality of the item too. For example, you may see two laptops for $799, but one will have 1GB of RAM and t    he other will only have 528MB.
